Top Ten Film’s Directed by Women (Part Two)
From comedy to heavy drama, Baseball players, bank-robbers, epiphanies, heart-break, social statements, tear-jerking or life-affirming Cinema; this list has it all.
1) Big   Dir. Penny Marshall  1988 Tom Hanks first Oscar-nod in a hilarious and original screenplay by Anne Spielberg.
2) Awakenings  Dir. Penny Marhsall  1990 Robin Williams and Deniro in a perfectly-directed film.
3) A League of Their Own  Dir. Penny Marshall  1992 “There’s no crying in Baseball!” Hanks and Penny Marshall re-teamed in this incendiary-film.
4) Boy’s Don’t Cry Dir. Kimberly Peirce  2000 Hillary Swank Oscar, based on a True-story. Heavy, but excellent.
5) Point Break  Dir. Kathryn Bigelow  1991 “The ride is over Bodi!” No it’s not, it has just begun if you missed this one. Note the year, 1991; the “remake” was five years ago. Like usual, the remake does not touch the original.
6) Whale Rider Dir. Niki Caro  2002 PERFECT movie! See it, do not google, do not pass go.
7) North Country Dir. Niki Caro 2005More timely than ever to the #metoo movement, Charlize Theron is brilliant in this.
8) MacFaland U.S.A. Dir Niki Caro 2015 No words, well, watch it!
9) The Hurt Locker Dir. Kathryn Bigelow  2008 About the Iraq War and is the first time a Woman won Best Director. It also nabbed Best Picture.
10)  Selma  Dir. Ava DuVurnay  2013
The arrival (into our consciousness) of Ava DeVurnay. The Oscar-winning theme song Glory by Common and John Legend says it all.
