Film Review by Talking Pictures Contributor Jennifer Rose

MAKING MONTGOMERY CLIFT is a fascinating documentary told by the nephew of film legend Montgomery Clift.  The nephew Robert Clift dives deep into whether or not his uncles portrays by Hollywood wad accurate as they saw a totally different side.  Montgomery Clift was known as being “tragically destructive”  “tormented from being queer” however in the film Clift’s nephew goes through family archives, mostly kept by his father, Brooks Clift, Monty’s brother.  Brooks was very disturbed by the way Clift’s persona was left as being “the slowest suicide in Hollywood” but to the contrary when the many home videos, interviews, photographs and taped phone conversations at length we see a different side to Monty that is joyful and funny and very focused on his career not to just grab every role, he was driven by his craft and he was open and comfortable about his gay relationships with men.  The film interviews friends and colleagues as well on his open nature.  The film was interesting in pointing out the incredible machine of bullshit that studios used back in the day with contracts and arranged marriages for image control and we are left wondering if the gossip and the press was merely sensationalizing to sell more. We get to glimpse the humor of Monty, the kindness and work ethic as well as him laughing and swimming in a pool as blue as his eyes, and beautiful as ever.
